EX. BTCC 'GROUP A' TOURING CAR
Middlehurst Road Race & Classic present this ex. BTCC, Toyota GB/Chris Hodgetts Motorsport — Toyota Corolla AE86 1.6 Twin Cam GT Coupe 'Group A' Touring Car.It competed in the 1986 British Touring Car Championship, ran by CHMS (Chris Hodgetts Motorsport) and was driven by Alan Minshaw, (former owner and founder of Demon Tweeks), as well as Chris Hodgetts himself. Chris used the car on a few occasions throughout the 86' season and used the car at the last round at Silverstone to win the OVERALL British Touring Car Championship title (even though it ran in the 1,301-1,600cc engine class, against much higher powered cars!)
Over the course of two race seasons running two Toyota Corolla AE86 GT Coupes (between 1986-1987), Chris Hodgetts Motorsport and Toyota GB claimed 18 class wins from 20 starts and secured back-to-back overall BTCC titles.
Between 2021 and 2023, after we purchased the car, it was subject to a no expense spared restoration and complete rebuild by Owens Fabrication. Since then we have competed in just 3x events and won our class on every outing, including finishing 7th overall at the Silverstone Festival in 2024 in the hands of Chris Middlehurst. Both Andy & Chris have shared the car and the only reason for sale is because we have purchased another car!
The build itself and the subsequent development has took this car to new levels of performance ever seen before from a 'Group A' AE86 racing car. Fully seam welded bodyshell with a full 'Custom Cages' roll cage. Fully rose-jointed front and rear suspension. Quick ratio steering box. Single-way adjustable AST suspension. Group A Homologated AP Racing 4 pot front brakes. AP Racing air jack system. 5 speed (dog-leg) manual gearbox by GearMotive. OS Giken limited slip differential with a 4.5 final drive ratio. Fully forged racing engine built to the highest spec possible by DTW (David Wild). Carbon Fibre Corbeau seat with Sabelt 6-point racing harnesses. Lightweight battery & fire extinguisher.
